Homeskillets, your job this weekend is to read.
Record the times and the amount of pages you read in your independent reading book. You must read AT LEAST 30 minutes. Then, write a paragraph, summarizing what you read.

Shep's Overdue Book List

Homeskillets, if you made the list, make sure you bring in your book to renew it!

Homeskillets, answer each of the following in full sentences:
  1. What is a conflict that you've had to face in the past?
  2. What sort of literary conflict would that problem fall under?

Homework 9/9/14

Homeskillets,

Tonight you are working on your FQR (Fact, Question, Response) charts. For this assignment you will use your independent reading books. Everyone who turned in a signed library agreement should now have an independent reading book. Here is a chart to help guide you:

Library Policy- Homework Tonight!

September 2, 2014

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to Eighth Grade English! One of the core features of the class is a very large library and your child will be selecting his or her independent reading books from this library. However, before your child can check out any books and take them home, I ask that you review these library policies with your child.

Checking Out Books
When a student wants to check out a book from the 8th grade library, he or she will sign it out with me.  I check every book individually before it leaves the classroom to make sure it is not damaged and is on an appropriate reading level for your child. Once a book is checked out, your child has 2 weeks to finish reading it. Your child may return a book early if he or she finishes reading it before the checkout period is over. It is imperative that each scholar returns a book in the classroom library (online) once they have finished with the book.

Lost or Damaged Books
If a book is lost or damaged, your child will be responsible for paying $5 (in real dollars). This money must be received before your child is allowed to check out another book from the library. Everyday that your child arrives at school without an independent reading book, s/he is unprepared to learn and will receive a zero for that portion of the class (not the entire class period).

Library Content
Since different readers enjoy reading different kinds of books, I make sure to include as many books as possible in my library. All books in the library have been screened and are quality literature.  Some of the books in the library deal with very difficult social issues or contain adult language and topics. As a result, it is possible that your student will choose to read a book of which you will not approve. For that reason, I ask that you monitor your own child’s reading choices and share your values with him or her at home.

Library Card
As eighth grade students, your child will need to have access to reading materials beyond those that I can provide in my library.  Please ensure that your child has a current MD or DC Public Library card that they can use to check out when necessary. If s/he does not, please make sure that your child gets a card within the next two weeks.

Thank you for taking the time to review these policies with your child. If you have any questions about any of these policies or about the class in general, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Ms. Shepard
I have read and fully understand Ms. Shepard’s Library Policies for the 2014-2015 school year.  My child and I agree to abide by all of the above policies.
