Our 8th Grade Team Meeting Announcements Are Here

Hi Family,

We have a few important things to highlight this week. Make sure you read the general announcements at the bottom of this email. We've got some important stuff to tell you. Without further ado:

Ms. Holt- Science
This week in science the honors class is making soap in the lab one group at a time. Other groups are working the budget, commercial, research and packaging for the soap.  They have made plans to meet at each other's homes to tweak their soap recipe's to test their chosen variable and record their commercials. Groups not in the lab are testing different brands of soap for a variety they've chosen (I. e. Which soap gets clothes cleaner? , which soap makes the longest lasting bubbles? Which soap works best in cold water?, etc.)
All classes are reviewing the physical and chemical properties of matter.
We will have a quiz on Thursday on periodic trends on the periodic table, physical and chemical properties of matter and important steps in the process of soap making.  Reminder: Soap is made by heating and acid (lard - Crisco) and an alkali substance (a base - baking soda)!!!

Mr. Barnes-Math
This week in Math students will measure the speed of light. Math counts sessions will  be starting next week (not this week). Parent permission forms for math counts will be sent out on Wednesday.

Mr. Barnes has created a new blog! He plans to post all of the updates and info for his class here http://new.schoolnotes.com/abarnes631.

Ms. Shepard-English
LIT Groups have been going well. This week we are reading the poetry of Nikki Giovanni in our LIT Groups. Homework packets will be distributed on Wednesday and due on Monday, October 27, 2014. On Thursday, students will have a quiz. Students will have three homework assignments this week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). There will be a quiz this week on Thursday.

Additionally, Ms. Shepard will be holding her after school program, High School Prep, beginning Wednesday, October 14, 2014. The program will be each week on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. Those parents interested in having their children involved in the class, please contact Ms. Shepard immediately.

Ms. Shepard has a blog! shepshomeworkhelp.blogspot.com

Mr. Banks- Social Studies
This week in social studies scholars will study the Spanish Conquest of the Americas. Students should have brought home a supplemental textbook. Please check to make sure your scholar's textbook is at home so that they can complete all assignments given from the book. Additionally, students may use the book to study.

Each scholar was assigned a project from Mr. Banks. The project will be due for all students on October 30th.

This week, students will have a quiz on chapter two sections one and two of their textbooks.

Ms. Gordon-Health
This week in Health, scholars will be studying bullying and suicide in honor of "Bullying Awareness" month. Scholars will have a homework assignment that is due on or before Thursday. The homework will not be accepted after Thursday.

Ms. Gordon still needs students to have their journals for her class. The majority of students have not brought their journals in.

General Announcements

  • GREAT NEWS: Students will be getting free iPads for use in school (only). Permission forms were sent home two weeks ago. If you have not yet signed a permission form for your child, please print the attachment and return the last page of the form, signed.
