(Last Week's) Weekly Update

Hi Family,

So sorry for the tardiness. This week has been hectic. We still don't want anyone left out of the loop. Here is a snapshot of what happened/what is to come this week:

Ms. Holt- Science
This week in science students will have a quiz on chemistry.

Mr. Barnes-Math
This week in Math the algebra 1 classes are writing linear equations. They will be using those equations to determine the slope, determining the distance between two points, and conduct systems of linear equations.

The eighth grade math honors classses are still working on integer exponents, their six properties, and the beginning of learning scientific notation.

Check out Mr. Barnes' blog at http://new.schoolnotes.com/abarnes631.

Ms. Shepard-English
This week we are analyzing the tone of poets and explaining how that tone helps contribute to the meaning of a poem. Homework packets will be distributed Thursday and due on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Please note that about 80% of students did not read the instructions for the last packet and as a result, they missed out on a significant amount of homework points for the assignment. Please ensure your scholar reads the instructions fully.

On Friday, students will receive their final grade report for the quarter. Please be sure to sign them and return them on Wednesday, November 5, 2014.

Additionally, Ms. Shepard will be holding her after school program, High School Prep, beginning Wednesday, October 14, 2014. The program will be each week on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. Those parents interested in having their children involved in the class, please contact Ms. Shepard immediately.

Ms. Shepard has a blog! shepshomeworkhelp.blogspot.com

Mr. Banks- Social Studies
This week in social studies scholars will study the Spanish Conquest of the Americas. Students should have brought home a supplemental textbook. Please check to make sure your scholar's textbook is at home so that they can complete all assignments given from the book. Additionally, students may use the book to study.

Each scholar was assigned a project from Mr. Banks. The project will be due for all students on October 30th.

Ms. Gordon-Health
This week in Health, scholars will have a health exam on Friday. Health homework is due on or before Friday.

General School Announcements
  • This is the LAST WEEK OF THE QUARTER. Please make sure that you scholar is adhering to any make-up work deadlines or expectations set by teachers.
  • Ms. Shepard is holding a "High School Prep Class" after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 5PM. If your child needs help with high school applications, have them stay with Ms. Shepard on Wednesday and Thursday. This week our focus is on organizing due date timelines and collecting ideas for entrance essays.
  • GREAT NEWS: Students will be getting free iPads for use in school (only). Permission forms were sent home two weeks ago. If you have not yet signed a permission form for your child, please print the attachment and return the last page of the form, signed. If you do not sign the permission slip for your child, that means they will not have the opportunity to access such innovative, college preparatory technologies. We hope to have the ball rolling on actual iPad distribution next week.
  • The school dance is tonight from 6PM-8PM.
  • Students will be dismissed two hours early on TOMORROW, Friday, October 31, 2014.
  • There will be no school on Monday and Tuesday, November 4th and 5th (that's next week, folks).
Let's make it a great week!
-The 8th Grade Team
