Happy Valentine's/President's/Snow Day Weekend. We have some important announcements for this week. The biggest announcement: NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17TH. ENJOY THE SNOW DAY!
Here is the rest:
Ms. Holt- Science
Students in science have take-home quizzes due on Tuesday. We will review the take-home quizzes and complete reviews in chemistry and physics to practice for MSA.
The honors class will turn in research on the moon, its surface, how they will travel to the moon, grow food, a map of the moon, and the effects of the moon's gravity on the body. The honor's class will also continue to work on building the lunar ISS. Please remind students to save soda bottles, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, washed meat trays, and cardboard for their projects. So far, only teachers have brought in materials.
Mr. Barnes- Math
Scholars in algebra will finish completing the square and start the transition to the quadratic formula and solving complex numbers. The mathematics 8 class will continue with the congruence of polygons. We will compare the similarity of polygons along with ratio and proportion.
Ms. Shepard-English
This past week, scholars began a new unit on informational text. This coming week will be speech week! Students will study famous speeches in history.
Scholars are completely done working on Of Mice and Men during Ms. Shepard's class. All other work for student projects will be completed at home. Projects will be due on WEDNESDAY, February 18th by 3:30 PM. This is an extended date from the original due date, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17th. No late submissions will be accepted after Wednesday. None.
High School prep will take place this week on Wednesday and Thursday. We will be working on applying to summer programs. For those parents who are interested, please take a look at the following links, which offer some excellent and out-of -the-box FREE summer program opportunities.

For further project details please check Ms. Shepard's blog shepshomeworkhelp. blogspot.com. You may need to scroll down a bit. Also, keep in mind that English 8 and English 8 Honors have different project expectations. Make sure you are looking at the correct post.
Mr. Banks- Social Studies
This week in social studies all scholars will be taking the post writing diagnostic for social studies. We will also be using the READ strategy to improve our reading comprehension. We will also examine the start of the American Revolution. Students can also earn 10 points toward their next quiz for every ream of copy paper that they bring in.
General School Announcements
- The IB Application is available online (PGCPS website) and the deadline is 3-12-15. The application for Forrestville Military Academy is also available in the guidance office and the deadline is 4-30-15.
- Team Hampton looks forward to helping our scholars in their transition to high school. We recognize the importance of teacher recommendations during this time in the school year. In order for us to have enough time to write quality recommendations, please be sure to place your request at least one week in advance.
- Students are invited to bring Earbud headphones (the small, fit in your pocket kind) to Ms. Shepard's class only. They will need the headphones as we move into our unit on informational text.

Ms. Shepard’s 8th Grade English Class OMAM Project is Here!
Ms. Shepard’s 8th Grade English Class
Of Mice and Men
Project
Part 1: Choose ONE of the following:
- Poem—write one long poem (at least 30 lines) or at least three
short poems (totaling at least 30 lines) in the form of your choosing about
the story, a theme or lesson learned from the story, or one or more of the
characters. The poem can be from your own perspective or it can be from
the perspective of one of the characters—for example, Lennie is writing
the poem or George, etc. (MS. SHEPARD WILL NOT ACCEPT elementary school
rhyming “roses are red/violets are blue/Lennie is sweet/and George is,
too.” —She wants thought and insight.)
- Only for those who are talented
illustrators: Create a
five-frame cartoon strip or a cartoon motion
flipbook that captures what happens in the scene from the novel that is most memorable to you. - Create a mobile or collage (at least 11 x 14) that captures one
important aspect of the story—it can be about one character or one theme
or one symbol, etc. (When making a collage, the poster board should be
filled). On a separate, typed piece, write an explanation for each item
you chose to include. Explain: why did you include it, what does it
represent?
- Film yourself performing a song/rap characterizing an aspect of the
story. (Make sure when you write it, it looks like a song written in
stanzas with a chorus.) The song must be at least 3 minutes long.
- Create an online literary scrapbook. Using PowerPoint, gather images, backgrounds, text, video, clipart and sound that express the relationship between George and Lennie. Limit the amount of text you use, just like a personal scrapbook. Include a Works Cited slide at the end with a list of the websites you used.
- Censorship Defense – Of Mice and Men has been frequently
challenged by special interest groups.
These groups often feel that this novel is inappropriate for students
to read because of foul language, violence, and the presentation of
stereotypical viewpoints. You must
decide whether you agree or disagree with this argument and write a letter
to the editor of a newspaper defending your opinion
of this issue. You must use specific details from the book and information you find about censorship (research if you need to) to support your opinion. Your work must be two typed pages.
- Take on the persona of two characters from the novel. These two characters will have chosen to keep in touch after the death of Lennie. You must write 2 letters each (4 total) that are exchanges that pen pals might have. Your letters must be one page each (front and back= one page; 2 typed pages=four pages)
Part 2: Everyone must complete this portion.
Use your chapter 6 re-write: Re-write the ending of
chapter 6. You can create an epilogue or an explanation of what happens after
Lennie dies or you can change the ending completely. Your re-write should be
one typed page in length. ( You may need
to add to what you have already written in class.)
Due Date: Tuesday, February 17, 2015
at 3:30 PM. There will be no late submissions. NONE.
This assignment is worth one homework
assignment, one classwork assignment, and one assessment grade. Please see
attached rubrics.
