1.5.15 Benjamin Stoddert MS 8th Grade Weekly Update

Happy New Year Family,

Welcome back from what we hope was a long and restful break for everyone. We want to make sure everyone is on the same page moving into this new year. Please take your time reading the announcements below.

Ms. Holt- Science
This week students will continue their work on Energy. Ask your scholar about the work they are doing in Ms. Holt's class.

Mr. Barnes-Math
Tomorrow students will submit their winter break math packets to Mr. Barnes. Look for homework to come out later in the week.

Check out Mr. Barnes' blog at http://new.schoolnotes.com/abarnes631.

Ms. Shepard-English
This week in English, students will do a mini-unit on narrative. To aid us in this process, we will read a short novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck.

Reading Winter Break packets will be due to Ms. Shepard tomorrow by 3:15PM.

The High School Prep After School Program is starting back up! For the next few months, students will practice the application process to summer programs and opportunities. This could be a great first step toward building college-ready resumes. I hope to see your scholar on Wednesday and Thursday after school.  Those parents interested in having their children involved in the class, please contact Ms. Shepard immediately.

Ms. Shepard has a blog! shepshomeworkhelp.blogspot.com

Mr. Banks- Social Studies
This week scholars will be taking a quiz on chapter 3, sections 2-5. All students will complete a study guide on Monday. The quiz will be on Wednesday/Thursday.

Ms. Gordon-Health
Students will begin to study infectious diseases. Homework will be due on Friday as always.

General School Announcements
  • The application for the Suitland Visual and Performing Arts is available online on the school's website. We will NOT be providing paper applications but parents who need access to a computer can come into the school and use our computers in the Parent Center or Media Center.  The application deadline is February 1st and the audition date is March 7th
  • The Community of Hope is offering tutoring to students in need of help with Math, English, and Science. This is a great alternative for those students who missed out on ELO opportunities. If you are interested, please have your student see Ms. Cameron in Guidance for a permission form.
  • IPads will be issued to students this week. They are to remain in school. If your scholar has not yet brought you an iPad permission form, this means, they will not be allowed to use the iPads for their lessons. This may prevent them from participating in class with the rest of the students.
  • An additional iPad permission form is attached. Please print, sign, and submit the form to Ms. Shepard.
  • In preparation for iPad use, each student has been assigned a school gmail account. To access your account, do the following: 1) Visit gmail.pgcps.org 2) For your username and password, enter the EXACT same information you use to log onto the school computers. 3) Username: Firstname-Lastname 4) Password: bstod----(last four numbers of your student ID)
Let's make the first week of 2015 a great one!
