GRADE REPORTS WENT HOME TODAY: 1.20.15 Benjamin Stoddert MS 8th Grade Weekly Update

Greetings Family,

Happy short-mid-week. We have a few things you need to know:

Ms. Holt- Science
This week in science students will be doing MSA review. Take-home quizzes should already have been submitted to Ms. Holt.

Ms. Shepard-English
This week in English, students are halfway through our short novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck.

Grade reports were sent home today. These are the last grade reports for the quarter from Ms. Shepard's class.

Next week, Ms. Shepard will be out for the week for military duty. Students have already been made aware that they will have an assignment due to the substitute while I'm gone. Students are expected to finish the class novel Of Mice and Men in my absence.

The High School Prep After School Program is back in full swing! For the next few months, students will practice the application process to summer programs and opportunities. This could be a great first step toward building college-ready resumes. I hope to see your scholar on Wednesday and Thursday after school.  Those parents interested in having their children involved in the class, please contact Ms. Shepard immediately.

Ms. Shepard has a blog! shepshomeworkhelp.blogspot.com

Mr. Banks- Social Studies
This week scholars will be talking about the English political tradition and how that tradition influenced the thirteen colonies. In addition, students will be studying the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment. The honors class will continue to examine the Bill of Rights.

Ms. Gordon-Health
This is the LAST week students will have Ms. Gordon. After this, students will report to health class. The final exam will be administered to all 8th grade students this week.

General School Announcements
  • There will be no school for students on Monday, January 26, 2015.
  • The application for the Suitland Visual and Performing Arts is available online on the school's website. We will NOT be providing paper applications, but parents who need access to a computer can come into the school and use our computers in the Parent Center or Media Center.  The application deadline is February 1st and the audition date is March 7th
  • Testing will be taking place this week and next week. Please make sure that your scholar gets ample rest, eats breakfast, and arrives to school on time.
  • The Community of Hope is offering tutoring to students in need of help with Math, English, and Science. This is a great alternative for those students who missed out on ELO opportunities. If you are interested, please have your student see Ms. Cameron in Guidance for a permission form.
  • IPads were issued to students earlier this month. They are to remain in school. If your scholar has not yet brought you an iPad permission form, this means, they will not be allowed to use the iPads for their lessons. This may prevent them from participating in class with the rest of the students.
  • An additional iPad permission form is attached. Please print, sign, and submit the form to Ms. Shepard.
  • In preparation for iPad use, each student has been assigned a school gmail account. To access your account, do the following: 1) Visit gmail.pgcps.org 2) For your username and password, enter the EXACT same information you use to log onto the school computers. 3) Username: Firstname-Lastname 4) Password: bstod----(last four numbers of your student ID)
Let's make it a great week!

-The 8th Grade Team
